Winterize Your Lawn Mower

Winter is here and so is the crisp air. This means mowing season has sadly come to an end and now you typically tuck your mower away until spring. But before you do that you may want to winterize your lawn mower!

Properly winterizing your lawn mower is a critical step in protecting your investment over time.  Having extended periods of inactivity can cause damage to your mower, and adding the cold weather can make it even worse. No matter the type of Husqvarna or eXmark lawn mower you own here are some tips to follow when winterizing your mower.

Clean the Lawn Mower

Fully clean the mower. It is important to make sure your lawn mower is clean of any left over debris on the exterior or interior, this can cause moisture and lead to rust. The easiest way to do this is by spraying down the deck, remove clumps of grass from the blades and wipe down the surfaces.

Regular Maintenance

Perform all regular needed maintenance. Your mower might need the oil changed, new spark plugs or even air filters. Taking the time to prepare the mower now will save you time in the spring to make sure you are ready to roll. You will want to either empty out the fuel system or add a fuel stabilizer for winter storage. Next consider lubricating points of friction.

Battery

To make sure your battery stays healthy you will want to give it some attention and consider entirely removing it. Store the mower battery in a cool, dry place and  put it on a trickle charge throughout the winter or about a month before your first cut.

Tires

It is best not to park your lawn mower on cold concrete during the winter. Place a piece of cardboard under each tire to help extend the life of your tires. Also consider rotating your tires so they do not bear too much pressure on any one side.

Storing the Lawn Mower

Storing your winterized mower in a covered area would be ideal to protect it from the cold and moisture. Using a cover to keep out the elements is also a great idea. Another safety note is to not store your mower near appliances that can cause a spark.
